Thousands of people in 2017 are going to be “in the room where it happens.” The Hamilton legacy that sparked and grew in 2016 is going to keep burning into some of the greatest cities of the world. (Okay, no more puns and Hamilton references will be made in the rest of this post...maybe.)
This past year, Hamilton already crossed from New York to Chicago and is dazzling audiences in the Windy City with a cast led by some of Broadway’s greatest performers.
With a successful year on Broadway and winning eleven Tony Awards, Hamilton asks, what next?
A lot more.
The Hamilton sensation that is sweeping the world is just beginning. With that in mind, here are three things we can look forward to for Hamilton in 2017.
1. Hamilton Tour
In March, the tour will begin its journey in San Francisco. The highly anticipated cast list was released by the theater gods this week, and they did not disappoint. Broadway veteran and current Alexander Hamilton alternate, Michael Luwoye, will take the title role of Alexander Hamilton on the road. Tony nominee Joshua Henry, who is currently playing Aaron Burr in the Chicago production, will be continuing as Burr in the tour. Tony nominee, Rory O’Malley, will take his crown with him as King George from New York to California. The casting choices made for this touring cast knocked it out of the ballpark, and we can be rest assured that the tour will have the same level of talent as the Broadway and Chicago productions.
2. London Premiere
Hamilton is crossing the pond over to London in November. Get comfortable since we still have a few months to wait, but we can anticipate lots of Hamilton news until then. What we do know is that it will be in London’s Victoria Palace Theater, which is currently under refurbishment. The theater will reopen in October giving Hamilton its new home. We also know that Lin Manuel Miranda is already involved with the production and casting. Although no casting has been announced yet, we do know that Miranda will be reprising his role as Hamilton in London for some performances.
3. Hamilton Mixtape Volume Two
If you haven’t listened to The Hamilton Mixtape yet, then stop reading and go listen. This soundtrack is a completely new and fresh way to listen to the songs we know and love from the cast recording. Some of the greatest artists of our time such as Sia, John Legend, Wiz Khalifa, The Roots, Kelly Clarkson, and more sing on the soundtrack bringing their own styles and taste to Hamilton’s music. My favorite songs on the soundtrack are Satisfied and Immigrants (We Get the Job Done). I know that volume two will meet and exceed all expectations. In a Tweet, Miranda said that we can expect to hear The Schuyler Sisters, The Room Where it Happens, and One Last Time on volume two.
Hamilton is going to continue to astonish us and never leave us bored. This is only the beginning of the Hamilton sensation and will continue to grow into boundaries both inside and outside of the theater.
Hamilton 2017 is surely going to be a year that will blow us all away.
(I had to sneak another one in there.)
